Since we are entering the height of our Iceland Summer Workshops, I thought I would take some time to talk about Iceland.
Attending a photography workshop / tour in Iceland is like stepping into an entirely different world, one where nature plays with light and landscape in ways you've never seen before. Workshop guides share their deep knowledge of Iceland's unique spots.
We guide you through hands-on learning experiences — think real-time feedback during critique sessions or casual chats over dinner. The workshops are cleverly planned around the whims of weather, making sure you witness phenomena such as the Midnight Sun, explore the Ring Road, or snap photos of puffins without having to plan every step yourself.
Envision joining a group in 2025 or 2026 for specialized workshops for Puffins, Landscape, Northern Lights or experiencing drone photography among Iceland's ethereal landscapes. Previous adventurers rave about not just the skills they honed but also about comfy beds and tasty meals shared amidst new friendships formed.
This isn't your average photo trip; it's a chance to dive into creativity with guidance from those who know best — all set against Iceland’s breathtaking backdrops. Ready to capture memories?

Top 5 Reasons to Attend a Photography Workshop in Iceland
Discover expert techniques from experienced professionals, capturing the unique landscapes and lighting conditions of Iceland. Immerse in adventure and community, embracing new skills while experiencing the raw beauty of this diverse terrain.
1 - Learn from local experts
I've been running photo tours in Iceland for a few years now. Let me tell you, there's nothing quite like learning from workshop leaders with local expertise. These photographers know every hidden waterfall and secret Northern Lights viewing spot.
We've spent years capturing the raw beauty of Iceland's landscapes. So imagine tagging along with us, camera in hand, ready to snag your own stunning shots.
Critique sessions during dinner? Absolutely. It’s casual yet so informative. You're sipping hot soup while getting feedback on that day's shoot—talk about multitasking! We don’t just teach; we share stories, making each lesson feel personal.
This isn't your typical photography class; it’s more like a mentorship with Icelandic scenery as your classroom and adventure waiting around every corner.
2 - Experience unique landscapes and lighting conditions
Picture this - you're standing in the heart of Iceland, camera in hand, with landscapes that look like something out of a dream. We’re talking about catching the Midnight Sun painting the sky shades of pink and orange you thought only existed in cotton candy.
Trust me, it's not your typical Saturday morning at the local park. The unusual scenery here plays by its own rules - mountains one minute, waterfalls the next. And let’s not forget those cheeky puffins posing for your lens as if they're trying to break into modeling.
Lighting? It’s like nature dialed up just for us photographers. You’ve got golden hours that stretch longer than any marathon runner could ever dream of running. Then there's natural lighting so perfect; it feels like Mother Nature herself decided to help out with your shoot.
Being here, you learn quickly that timing is everything – we take you when and where we need to be for those once-in-a-lifetime shots.
Forget about sifting through pages of research; we have you covered, making sure you're always in front row seats for nature's best shows – all while enjoying some top-notch accommodations and food between shoots.
3 - Have the opportunity for adventure and community
Iceland's photography workshops aren't just about snapping shots; they're a ticket to adventure and making new friends in the photography world. Imagine hiking through unspoiled highlands, camera gear on your back, alongside people who get why you'd wake up early in the morning for the perfect shot of puffin colonies on GrÃmsey, or staying up late in autumn to photography the amazing Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). Fall in Iceland has cooler temperatures, less crowds, and clearer skies for the Northern Lights. Summer allows us to flip the time and visit iconic waterfalls and other locations before and after the tour buses & other tourists are there.
It's like forming our little tribe, bound by a love for capturing breathtaking landscapes, local wildlife and/or Northern Lights.
The thrill kicks in as we set foot in locations so pristine, it feels like we've stepped into another realm—a paradise for landscape photographers. Here, every outdoor photography experience comes with its own set of challenges and rewards.
We share tips, cheer each other on during those early morning or late night shoots, and swap stories over dinner. This camaraderie? It's priceless. You come for the photography retreat but leave with an unforgettable travel and learning experience—plus a bunch of new Instagram pals.
4 - Safety
1. Weather Conditions Can Change Rapidly
- Unpredictable: Sunshine can quickly turn to storms. Always check the Icelandic Meteorological Office for up-to-date weather forecasts.
- Wind: Gusts can be dangerously strong—capable of damaging car doors or making walking/running hazardous.
- Winter Travel: Snow and ice are common even into spring. Roads may close or become impassable.
2. Road Conditions and Driving Safety
- Gravel Roads & F-Roads: Many inland roads are unpaved and require 4WD vehicles. Check road.is for real-time road conditions.
- Single-lane Bridges: Common in rural areas; always yield to cars already on the bridge.
- Sheep on Roads: Free-roaming sheep often cross highways—drive slowly and remain alert.
- No Guardrails: Many roads don’t have barriers, especially near cliffs or rivers.
3. Preparedness for Remote Areas
- Fuel & Food: Fill up often. Gas stations and stores can be very far apart in remote areas.
- Connectivity: Mobile coverage can be poor in the highlands or remote coasts.
- Theft: Tourism brings thieves that can easily steal and sell camera gear and other belongings.
4. Nature Safety
- Hot Springs: Some natural pools can be dangerously hot or unstable. Only swim in approved areas.
- Glaciers & Volcanoes: Never explore glaciers or volcanic areas without a trained guide.
- Black Sand Beaches: Sneaker waves are powerful and unpredictable—never turn your back on the ocean.
5. Clothing and Gear
- Layered Clothing: Waterproof and windproof outerwear, thermal layers, and good hiking boots are essential.
- Headlamp & Power Banks: Especially if you're traveling in winter, daylight is limited.
- Emergency Kit: Bring a first aid kit, food, water, and warm blankets—especially for road trips.
5 - Photography Workshops in Iceland Vs. Alaska
Alright, let's dive into the icy waters of comparison, shall we? It's like picking between two outrageously good flavors of ice cream - you want them both, but your diet (or in this case, wallet and time) says, "Um, let's think this through." So, here I am, doing the heavy lifting for us. On one hand, you've got Iceland's otherworldly landscapes, and on the other, Alaska's untamed wilderness. Buckle up—oops, no starting with "buckle up"—let's just get rolling with a look at what sets these two photography workshop destinations apart.

Choosing between Iceland and Alaska for a photography workshop? It's like asking me to choose my favorite chocolate bar. Impossible. Each has its own quirks, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. Sure, the workshops in both places promise adventure and epic shots, but the flavor of each is as distinct as... well, Iceland and Alaska.
